Getting CALI is mandatory. In order to assure every accident victim can get proper medical treatment, the government collects money via CALI. By paying a small fee, all accident victims can get proper medical treatment. Moreover, it can also provide those victims who suffer from a hit and run case with sufficient medical treatment and compensation for loss of life.
Considering the possible risks when riding a motorbike, it is vital to understand what CALI covers (and what it doesn't).
As the fees for CALI tend to be low -mostly less than NTD1,000 - the government can only guarantee coverage for physical injuries of the victim but not damaged assets. Only voluntary policies will cover damage to third party assets.

No-Fault Compensation |
When a traffic accident happens, claims will be paid out to the third part regardless of which rider is at fault. |
Direct Claim Right for Speedy Claims |
Because claims are paid out regardless of which rider is at fault, you can claim directly from your insurer. It helps you get your approved compensation quicker. |
Motor Vehicle Accident Compensation Fund |
Unfortunately, you may get involved in an accident with someone who does not hold a CALI policy, is not the vehicle registrant, or for example flees the scene of the accident. In this case, the government’s Motor Vehicles Accident Compensation Fund takes responsibility for making sure that your claim is settled. |

Remember, you must buy a CALI policy; it is required by the government.
Make sure you double check the expiration of our CALI - you will be liable to punishment if you ride without a valid policy. We advise you to renew your CALI two months ahead of its expiration date.
Your CALI should be valid for longer than 30 days, or else the motor vehicle division cannot make any inspections or any changes to our vehicles.
