What is CALI?

Compulsory Automobile Liability Insurance (CALI) is a compulsory insurance required by government in Taiwan. Every car owner in Taiwan is required to get a CALI policy.

Why Do We Need CALI?

CALI acts as the initial cover for third parties involved in a traffic accident. It protects not only the public but also every potential victims of a traffic accident.

How Does CALI Protect Us?

With the premium that every car owner pays, the government is able to guarantee that any accident victim can get proper treatment from a medical facility. The government also uses the money collected from CALI to ensure that those who were the affected party of a hit and run case will get medical treatment and compensation for loss of life from a land vehicle accident.

In an accident, CALI covers

As the fees for CALI tend to be low - from NTD1000-2000 - the government can only guarantee coverage for physical injuries of people but not any assets that may have been damaged. Only voluntary policies will cover damage to third party assets.

Situation What Happens
No-Fault Compensation When a traffic accident happens, claims will be paid out to the third part regardless of which drive at fault.
Direct Claim Right for Speedy Claims Because claims are paid out regardless of which driver is at fault, you can claim directly from your insurer, which helps you get your approved compensation quicker.
Motor Vehicle Accident Compensation Fund You may unfortunately get involved in an accident with someone who does not hold a CALI policy, is not the vehicle registrant, or for example flees the scene of the accident. In this case, the government’s Motor Vehicles Accident Compensation Fund takes responsibility for making sure that your claim is settled.

Penalty without CALI

Remember, you must buy a CALI policy, it is required by the government.

Make sure you double check the expiration of our CALI - you will be liable to punishment if you drive without a valid policy. We advise you to renew you CALI 2 months ahead of expiry.

The valid period of your CALI should be longer than 30 days, or else the motor vehicle division could not make inspection or any change to our vehicles.
